Personal Shopper: Tunics for Catherine's Maple Barn Meet the Family

Catherine writes: "Hi Y'all! I think this one might be right up Mitchy's alley!
So, I'm traveling to the great white north of Massachusetts in a few weeks for my future brother-in-law's wedding. The problem is, we have several things to be dressed for during this weekend extravaganza and I've got most of it down pat, might I say my dress to the Sunday afternoon, churchy, no liquor involved wedding is fab! The wedding and reception are in fancier type places in the middle of nowhere MA but the rehearsal dinner is the quagmire. It's at a maple barn. I'm not even positive what a maple barn is. It's VERY casual and when I asked the bride what she was wearing she's wearing a prairie skirt and a tank top and cowboy boots. That doesn't really give me anything to go off of. Since I'll be meeting some family members for the first time I'd like to look very put together and appropriate and see if I can fool them into thinking I've got my life together and their son/nephew/grandson isn't throwing his life away on a southern belle wannabe. Since it's going to be ungodly cold at that time of year, think mid 50's. I'd like to be able to wear tights and boots with a tunic. I just can't seem to find the right one... I'd definitely be open to a tunic with a belt to define my waist more!! I like black, and deeper, richer colors. Think anthropology with more edge and poppier colors. I don't think poppier is a word...
Thanks y'all!! I can't tell you how great you are! If you ever get down to NC I'll buy you all a drink!"

Hi Catherine! It's Mitchy, and I can see what you mean about not being able to find the right tunic--it's pretty dismal out there, especially when it comes to options with longer sleeves. So here's a selection of tunics and dresses that should impress your new family without being too dressed up; you should be able to warm up the shorter sleeved options with just a basic black cardigan. Have fun at the maple barn (whatever that is)!
