Personal Shopper: Alabama Girl in 'Right Place, Wrong Weather'

A.G. writes: Hi Outblush! I really do need your help ASAP. I grew up in Alabama my whole life and have just moved to Indiana for graduate school at Notre Dame. I DESPERATELY need an intense cold weather jacket, as its already September and I have nothing! I want something that at least goes to mid-thigh, preferably to the knee. I guess I want down or wool or something, but I don't know--whatever you think is warmest! I would like to spend less than $400, but I can maybe go up to $500, as long as its high quality and something that will last at least 5 years while I work on my Ph.D. I really love this Parka from Canadian Goose, but it is a bit out of my price range. I am a size 10 and M-L depending on the brand. I like the nip in at the waste, because clothes lacking a defined shape generally don't look great on me. I am open to colors other than black! Please Outblush, HELP ME! I have no idea how to shop for this kind of thing! Who knew that being warm was so expensive?!

As a Southerner myself, I understand your need to defend yourself from all things cold and bitter. Including Indiana winters. I'm glad you specified the length; it is key in determining the silhouette and overall look of your entire wardrobe. Make sure to pack some toe warmers to go with these bombshell coats. Cold feet are almost as bad as cold days with no jacket. -Magzilla

Number 2 has been out of stock for a long, long while (I thought) - is it just there to taunt us about the Coat That Got Away? :(

No. I would never put up anything that was out of stock. This Personal Shopper was completed a little while ago and it must have been since then that this little beauty bit the dust. I'm boycotting Modcloth from here on out.

THANKS SO MUCH! Outblush is amazing for getting this done so quickly! I love love #1, although #7 might be a bit more practical... I have some tough decisions ahead of me. Thank you Outblush, I'd be lost without you!

I'd check Lands End. I got a great mid-thigh length down parka from them last year for under $200. And get used to layering. I suspect this first winter is going to be quite a shock to you.

I would also try checking out Patagonia. They have excellent long down coats that get me through the Chicago winters. You can't beat their return policy either should anything happen to it.
