Personal Shopper: A Romantic Vintage Wardrobe for Katelyn's Study Abroad

Katelyn writes: "Hi! I really love your site. I'm studying abroad in Italy this fall, and really want to look pulled together and polished. I love retro or vintage type dresses, like modcloth/anthropologie. I really just want to look classic and pretty, maybe even romantic.

My maximum budget is $800. Anything that is classic or romantic is what I'm looking for, I'm having a horrible time deciding how to make a wardrobe! I've been a student intern for two years, so my closet is just full of black pants and white button ups. I need help getting variety and more feminine styles. I'm a size four in dresses and pants, and a small in tops. I wear a size 7.5 in shoes. Thank you so much and I really hope you'll help me!"

Katelyn, I put together a few outfits that I think you'll be able to mix and match easily, plus some tops you'll be able to style with your existing wardrobe. The whole thing totals $749, so now you have just a bit of extra spending cash for Italy! Buon viaggio! -Mitchy

Great post! I love everything here, and want to buy it all. I'm going to have to make some tough decisions. I adore the flats with the bow, and would have purchased them already if they weren't out of my size!

Oh my gosh, I live in Italy and first of all fall in Italy is not that warm, it even snows. Bring warm clothes. Second, they'll laugh in her face if she wears that. It's ridiculous, she will be mistaken for a Mormon missionary. Such prints are only for sofas and kitchen towels. Complete don't for Italy. Please don't! They'll all laugh behind your back. Dark jeans and plain shirts will do.

I lived in Italy for a while and think that all of this would be great. Especially...well, I was going to list which numbers would work best and realized it was all but 17 but that's probably because I think 17 is hideous. Italy is just a place like any other. No one is honestly going to laugh at you. They aren't THAT rude.

I think this one is great, actually, Totab - Mitchy gave Katelyn EXACTLY what she asked for, and I think it's all adorable!

These picks are perfect for a romantic look in Italy! As a student who recently studied there, I can say that you definitely want to bring pieces that mix and match (less luggage), and are comfortable and cute (don't forget those flats!). Though dark pants/light top is always safe, it sounds like you've been wearing a lot of that recently, so enjoy your time there and wear some of those pretty skirts and dresses (I love #2 and #9). These all make for a great classic look!

I love The Maggy London Sweater. I love summer dresses but I don't always love my arms so I'm off to Nordstrom to pick up one in black and to check out the brass plum sweaters even though I'm not a junior anymore.

I am thrilled you like it. I had originally also included this top but it sold out ridiculously fast online once discounted:

but I went to Anthropologie last night and the totally had them (and I totally bought one), so if you have a store near you, check out their clearance.
