This film explores the fate of the orphaned Jamal, whose love for his childhood friend, Latika, takes him on a quest through the "slums" of India—from a ring of childhood prostitutes to the home of a notorious gangster to, mysteriously, the Indian equivalent of the gameshow Who Wants to be a Millionaire? When Jamal manages to win the entire million, the police and his audience are left wondering how he did it. Did he cheat? Or was it destiny?
