Ask parents what parenting books and techniques saved their sanity when they had newborn babies, and chances are a lot of them will point you toward Dr. Harvey Karp's The Happiest Baby on the Block. In it, Dr. Karp recommends using rhythmic, loud SHHH-ing sounds to soothe your baby; it mimics the whoosh-whoosh-whoosh they hear in the womb. Sometimes, though, your mouth needs a break and you just can't SHHH any longer, but that baby's still wailing. Baby Shusher ($35) to the rescue! It comes prerecorded with those much-vaunted high-volume shushing sounds. After just a short time, you'll be able to transition over to using a regular white noise machine, so $35 might seem a bit much to spend. As any parent can tell you, though, $35 is a pittance when compared to your sanity after your newborn has been wailing for three hours. Just trust us.
