These days, we start hearing "Jingle Bells" around October 1st, and the holiday jingle onslaught continues 'til the post-Christmas clearance sales are over in mid-January. As much as we love classic songs like "Silent Night" and "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree", we thought we'd suggest some alternate tunage to you this year. Each of us editors will be presenting our Fab Five Holiday Playlist, of songs that remind us of the joy (and stress) of the holiday season, and some fun gift ideas that tie in with 'em.
1. Snoopy's Christmas
I bet you'd be hard pressed to find me anyone who didn't get the correlation between The Peanuts and Christmas! From It's A Charlie Brown Christmas to Sno-cones tumbling from Snoopy's dog house, the gang stuck with us through all our childhood holidays--our parents', too. So why not gift a new generation some of your fondness for Lucy, Linus, Woodstock and the rest with favorites that started it all: The Peanuts Collection: Treasures from the World's Most Beloved Comic Strip ($26)?
2. O Holy Night
I can't thank my parents enough for always reminding me to be a generous person, especially around the holidays when my own credit card woes and head cold pale in comparison to the challenges others in my community may be facing. Nothing gets a gal in the holiday spirit faster than a little giving, whether it be volunteering or donating. See what's needed in your hometown through the Make-A-Wish-Foundation.
3. Sleigh Ride
What would Outblush be without a little fashion? You come here for the good stuff, either for your own wish-list or to see the pleasure on family and friends' faces when they open your gift. Give the fashion-savvy, social butterfly in your life a reason to look hot while attending soirees and bundling up for sleigh rides with the Zowie Scarf ($98)
4. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
I know I'm not alone when I mention that I'm far from family this Christmas. Tthough my husband and I try to visit often, airline prices occasionally thwart our attempts. Judy Garland's tearful rendition of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas never fails to choke me up. If I can't be with family for the holidays, maybe a milestone photo will make a good substitute. The one of me and Dad under the Christmas tree circa 1987 ought to make a thoughtful Canvas Print ($59-540).
5. Mele Kalikimaka
As a native New Yorker, I've never experienced a warm, beachy holiday. Maybe that's why this song has always been a fav! If you're feeling extra generous with your loved ones this year, give them the gift of a Hawaiian Vacation ($inquire). I'm pretty sure you wouldn't regret sipping cocktails out of coconuts under lit up palm trees! But then again, if snow is a MUST on Christmas Day, stay north and just bring along a Dancing Dashboard Hawaiian Girl ($17) to your next White Elephant party!
Layla here: At a strapping 5'2", I've got plenty of tricks up my sleeve for fellow petite girls who need to look fashion fabulous. Plus, I make all of my beauty purchases online just so I can get free trial size samples in the mail. If you're not sure about a product, chances are I've tried it! I'd be glad to recommend my favs. I also have a knack for men's apparel and gifts, especially geek guy gifts, thanks to the expertise of my own gadget-inclined guy.
