We haven't yet read Sue Monk Kidd's new novel, The Invention of Wings ($17), but it's at the top of our list. Oprah has already endorsed it, and we loved Kidd's first book, The Secret Life of Bees. We're pretty sure the novel will be both heartwarming and heart-wrenching, because it fictionalizes the lives of abolitionist Sarah Grimké and her slave girl Hetty, nicknamed "Handful", during the pre-Civil War South. While it takes plenty of liberties with the actual historical facts, it does promise to spin a pretty beautiful tale about the powers of friendship and freedom.
