If you could bring just one book for your Italian travel adventures we'd suggest packing Rick Steves' Italy 2012 ($18) in your knapsack. We've used him for insider tips on how to get around waiting in the giant lines at museums, hotels to stay at that aren't found on typical travel sites, and quaint restaurants the locals love. He also has maps and self-guided tours that make wandering a city (or museum) a little more insightful and entertaining. We pick up his books for dreaming about travel when our real lives are less than exciting, too.

I have a travel crush on Rick Steves.

Used this on my trip to Italy with my girlfriend back in '09, it did wonders. Definitely recommended!

Jess, how did you use this in '09? Are you a time traveler?
One Ring to Rule Them All
I guess she used the '09 version. I've used Rick Steves as well back in the day (college days, sigh), and he was a godsend.
