Carolyn Turgeon's Godmother ($11) is a retelling of Cinderella, and we have to warn you that it's not nearly so cheerful as the cover makes it look. But neither is it one of those intolerably sullen, gloomy fairy tale-based novels that make fairy tales look like no fun whatsoever. Narrator (and title character) Lil provides us with descriptions of her acquaintances and her surroundings so intriguing that we want to take her word on them, and on everything. Should we?
