You Tell Us - Bat Conservatory House

Some of us are, well, scaredy cats when it comes to bats. We know the idea of the Bat Conservatory House ($55) is brilliant - those guys can eat up to 600 mosquitoes and other insects in an hour. This is great, we hate getting eaten alive by bugs, but do we really want to invite the bats over? These houses can hold approximately 40 bats... 40 bats! So you tell us... Hotel Transylvania on the side of your homes?

It all comes down to math:

Let mosquito bites=not sexy

Bats=no mosquitos
Bat houses=bats
therefore
Bathouses=sexy

Not a chance. Bat guano (poop) can stain the side of your home and are usually quite apparent near entry points. Even worse though, it also carries all kinds of diseases like Histoplasmosis and Cryptococcosis. See here for more info: http://www.getbatsout.com/histoplasmosis.htm

Which is why you don't put a bat house *on your house.* A bat house out in your garden, on the other hand, is a great investment. Unless you are opening up the bat house and sticking your hand in, it's very unlikely that you will ever come up close and personal with one-- and if you do, just be smart and don't touch. No reason to freak.

I have one of these installed by the garden. I never really notice the bats, and it works wonders as far as pest control goes. Histoplasmosis is a respiratory disease that results from guano- which rots and turns into fungus. Unless you're rolling around in it, you'll be fine.

From the site that elp posted:

"The bat control professional may recommend that you place a bat house of some sort near your building at some time during this process. This will give the exiled bats a place to go and will allow for the continuance of beneficial insect control provided by bats."

Bat houses: recommended even by people whose job it is to get the little guys out of your house.

Absolutely! I live in FL and walks around the neighborhood at dusk I see bats fly up around the trees and I have so wished I could lure the little rodents back to my place. Those walks at dusk are nearly impossible during the summer when the mosquitoes are down right deadly. Our police dept. hands out 100% deet cream to help prevent disease. I'd much rather have a little extra help with the bugs in a way that didn't involve me coating myself in chemicals.
