Our sling bag is so yesterday we need a refresher, like, now. With a bang of color and a tsunami of rich realist imagery, the Rebagz Napoleon Messenger Bag ($58) empowers us to conquer our workload. We don't condone expansionism or short men, but we have to admit this bag is a jaw-dropper. Really, there's no way we can say no to rearing horses anyway.
Here's the scoop... The father of the Napoleon complex is Napoleon I of France, whose military campaigns pretty much controlled 19th century European politics. Napoleon's Empire treated total war like total fun but also established the Napoleonic Code, which helped heal the wounds of Europe by sparking an international rule of law. One of the biggest propagandist statements of his reign was Jacques-Louis David's painting, Napoleon Crossing the Alps c.1800, which is reproduced on this bag with a more peaceful landscape background. David's careful compositional strategy controls how we see this work. The strong diagonal pose conveys heroic movement, but Napoleon's restriction within a circular limit to shows brave stability. Dramatic lighting and a pointed gesture imply unwavering future victory. Basically, we're supposed to side with Napoleon. This goes way beyond airbrushing, phew.
