Not realizing the Gerold Vase ($98) is a mod rendition of a palm tree trunk is like not realizing Best Coast sounds just like the Beach Boys. Infusing California Modernism into a beachy retreat is easy with this crisp vase. Plus, it's so rare, you'll impress your antique lover buddies.
In the 1960s, California Modernism, a West Coast outcropping of the Mid-Century Modern style, was booming. Technically speaking, this vase was made right in the transition of CA Mod and Op Art. Born from the constructivist practices of the Bauhaus, Op Art confuses the figure-ground relationship with color and line that contradict our perceptional expectations. Basically it makes it hard to tell if if we should interpret things as convex or concave in our field of vision. Trippy, dude.
