The Bee Bottle ($48) by Laura Zindel slaps antique-looking zoological drawings on eccentric ceramics. We don't know what fluid is mean to be held in this bottle or why is has a funny curved stopper, but we like how weird it is. Maybe we'll put our toner in it and store it on our artsy bathroom counter display.
Before museums, various Cabinet of Curiosities exhibited specimens of exotic flora, fauna, antiquities and much more. Zindel is following in the footsteps of artful scientific women like Maria Sibylla Merian who popularized rare metamorphosis in elegant watercolor drawings. An entire exhibition, Maria Sibylla Merian & Daughters, Women of Art and Science was devoted to this line of documentary artwork, and the classic realistic style continues to draw fans. Unlike Merian, Zindel produces transferware ceramics from her exquisite drawings.
