Says Natalie: "I need help finding a wedding gift for my sister! She would most appreciate something eco friendly (ie. Recycled glass, etc) but am having trouble
coming up with ideas. This is my sister, I don't want it to be a run-of-the-mill wedding gift, she would be open to something 'different'. I am looking in the 200-500$ price range, and it would have to ship to Canada."
Hi, Natalie! You and your sister sound like genuine gals, and we're honored by your request. But you didn't make it easy, did you? (Just teasing.) We'll start with what might be the least romantic wedding gift ever devised, but one that our relatives in Canada (yes, multiple OB editors have close family there) would be all for: 1) a NOMA Energy Star air conditioner ($150). The hot summers the last few years have caught them off guard in homes with no A/C, and we figure your sister's residence might have the same issue. If the air conditioner isn't green enough, or if you'd rather give the newlyweds something hot than something cold (badumcha) this 2) Nakshi Kantha cotton quilt ($110 US) is a lovely, functional, and eco-friendly way to maintain a comfortable body temperature.
Since you mentioned glass, there's also this striking 3) fused glass bowl ($37 US). Pretty, but not frou-frou. To show off the sparkle, these 4) bronze finish Brookfield lamps ($119-$149 US) marry energy efficiency with a funky look; to arrange shipping to Canada you'll need to talk to the nice folks by phone.
Lastly, this vaguely face-like chrome device is actually a vintage 5) retractable clothesline ($59 US). It's practically decor, but we suspect that your sister might actually (gasp) use it to do laundry. And for that we applaud her.
Congratulations to your sister, Natalie, and let us know how we did!
