Personal Shopper: New York City Winter Clothes for Cyprus Native Rachel C

Rachel C. wrote, "Hi Outblush! I'm probably one of your most faraway readers, and I was hoping you could help me out! I live in Cyprus, and I'm planning a move to New York for grad school in September, and all I've been hearing are horror stories about New York's awful winters (they're not that bad, are they?!). Since I've lived my whole life on a hot, humid island (except for four years in the UK, but even the cold there doesn't compare, so I've been told) I'm not quite sure what constitutes 'proper winter clothing' for NY. I certainly don't have anything suitable here, and I know it's still summer, and impossible to think of winter clothes now, but I'm planning on doing my winter clothes shopping in the States rather than here (where down coats are an alien concept) so I was hoping you could give me some ideas of what to look for and what to stock up on. Thanks!! Rachel"

Rachel, speaking as someone who went to college in Minnesota (aka the frozen tundra), layers are going to be your BFF. You never know if where you're going will have the heat cranked up or down, so having lightweight pieces like long underwear, camisoles, thin-but-warm wool or cashmere sweaters, and the like is advisable. That will keep you warm both indoors and out. The thing we'd recommend spending the most money on? A good down (or Thinsulate-lined) coat, and good high snow boots with traction soles. You'll wear them pretty much every day, and they'll last you for years. Don't waste cash on expensive gloves, hats, and scarves, as those are easily misplaced and lost in the shuffle - just hit up Target or H&M for cute, colorful ones to add some spice to your ensembles.

And, above all, never underestimate the healing powers of a good hot toddy or cup of hot tea at the end of a long, cold day!

Thanks so much! I was worried that staying warm in winter would mean looking like the Michelin man but all these picks are super cute!
