Personal Shopper: Maxi dresses for Hillary the petite Canadian

Hillary C. wrote, "It feels like -19C in Toronto, with a winter storm warning. Obviously I am spending my time like everyone else in the city -- planning for spring! I'm hoping to find a go-to dress for a trip to Israel and Egypt in April. I figured a maxi dress should do it - colourful, trendy, airy, and covers me up when needed. My problem is I'm about 5'2, 120lbs, petite build. Most maxi dresses make me look mini! Can you help me find a dress that is: a) available in/shippable to Canada, b) under $100, and c) cut so it won't make me look like a munchkin? Cheers, Hillary"

To the original requester: just to let you know, none of these dresses are appropriate to wear by themselves in Egypt, or in any of the places of worship in either country. Make sure you invest in a lightweight cardigan/shawl that you can cover your shoulders, back and chest with; showing skin, especially in Egypt, is definitely frowned upon. There are certainly tourists who wear less, but they tend to get much more trouble/heckling than those who stay a bit more covered. In addition, if you're going to be in Jerusalem, you need to appropriately cover your body when walking into any of the holy places. You can basically wear whatever you want in Tel Aviv, though. Enjoy your trip!

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU, ladies! These dresses are super cute and just what I had in mind -- #s 3 and 7 look like potential winners to me. I might just get two - one for the road and one for Toronto Patio Season ;-)

Mille grazie!

To the other commenter - thanks for the tips, I do plan on bringing cardigans and scarves/shawls to wear over anything. I've spent some time getting up to speed on travelling in Muslim countries, believe me! I wanted a maxi dress so I could do just that - wear it to a wedding in Tel Aviv but also wear it out to dinner in other places more covered up. Just saves me from having to pack two dresses :-)

No problem! They're both absolutely lovely countries and lots of fun to visit. If you get the chance, Felfela in Cairo has THE most delicious Middle Eastern food ever. Enjoy the wedding! :)
