Personal Shopper: Justine's Search for the Best Beauty Box

Justine writes: Hi ladies! I have been very curious about the monthly beauty boxes that have been EVERYWHERE lately. I mentioned to my husband I think they're cool and interesting, but I wanted to know your take. Do you have a favorite? Maybe there's one that has the best bang for your buck?

Girls, we thought we knew all the best beauty boxes out there. We were completely wrong. Since this recently-revived idea has caught steam, there has been an explosion of companies that ship out samples of quality products monthly. Some allow you to customize your box while others just ship a box full of surprises on the first of every month. Some are eco-friendly, some are all about the budget, and others are focused on the best of the best regardless of price. These thirteen available subscriptions are constantly selling out, so make sure you check back with their respective sites as often as necessary to get your name on the lists.

1. Eco-Emi ($15/month) Eco-friendly products ranging from makeup to goodies for animals and organic food.
2. The Sample Lounge ($15/month) Receive sevenn healthy beauty and skincare products each month, plus promotions from their participating brands.
3. Spirit Beauty Lounge ($15-25/month) Choose your samples for $25/month or choose from a selection of pre-assembled packages for your particular skin type for $15/month. All organic.
4. The White Apricot ($15/month) A selection of the best organic and vegan beauty products. Comes in eco-friendly packaging; has one of the larger families of participating brands.
5. Amarya Beauty Box (£10/month) A subscription service specializing in organic products for our readers in the UK.
6. Conscious Box ($19/month) One of the most expensive services, but it is chock full of goodies, heavy emphasis on snack items.
7. Blissmobox ($19/month) Eat your way to health; mostly food with the occasional beauty product.
8. Glymm ($10/month) One of our favorites, this box comes packed with samples of the kind of high end stuff you often read about here on Outblush.
9. GoGoGirlfriend ($7/month) This membership includes the monthly box, reward points, monthly giveaways and discounts in their retail store.
10. Birchbox ($10/month) Widely reviewed as the best in the business, Birchbox takes the cake in deluxe sample availability.
11. Loose Button ($12/month) They offer the most deluxe-sized samples, which makes them the best bang for your buck.
12. Pink Moment ($12/month) Another eco-friendly company, they offer the most beauty as opposed to snackage.
13. Beauty Army ($12/month) They are the only company that allows you to choose from a selection of samples so you know what you're getting in each box.

Birchbox is ok, but if you don't live in NY you will wait FOREVER for anything to ship, and if you order from their store they sometimes sell things that aren't even in stock! So even more waiting. It was more of a nightmare than an excitement getting a box every month. I'm definitely going to try one of these other ones, I didn't know there were so many out there!

I adore Birchbox and when I lived in NC I'd only ever wait 5-6 days for it's arrival after it shipped. I tried GoGoGirlfriends and was SORELY disappointed -- the quality of the items was abysmal (think tiny pot of Wal Mart branded lotion with a little shell glued on the lid). The best thing I received from them was an E.L.F. ($1) eyeliner brush. Birchbox is definitely the way I'll continue to go! Last month I received a full-size Stila eyeliner.

I did not care for any of Beauty Army's available samples even though I got to pick the ones they sent. I like Birchbox, but the size and quality of the products has gone down a lot. The reward points system is great, though, and I have managed to get a lot of full size products for 1/4 their price using points and coupon codes. Eco-Emi comes with A LOT of stuff, and it is all very good quality, but it is also all eco-conscious and won't have department store makeup brands. MyGlam isn't mentioned here, but they have been giving out a lot of full-sized products from The Balm and NYX. The service is new, though, so shipment has been slow, and it is hard to get a subscription.

Hi Justine, thanks for mentioning Conscious Box. I'd like to point out that our box has over 15 samples in it every-month with many being full-sized products. Our box is also very beautiful and completely sustainable and recyclable. We're not just snacks either. You'll find a wide variety from natural beauty products, to many other conscious lifestyle products! We've got a special Valentine's Box coming up too! Hurry, the deadline to sign up is February 6th! Thanks again.

Second for the MyGlam - I signed up when they were new and have loved my products - from full-size Urban Decay eyeshadows to a Nyx matte lip stain, a FULL SIZE cucumber face peel, great mascara samplers, Wen hair products deluxe samples and on and on and on. They are still very new so it will be interesting to see how their quality holds up over time but for now I'm loving their service.

I agree with Sarah about Birchbox. I live on the West Coast and it takes about 2.5 to 3 weeks to get my box and I've had to wait longer than that before (the company was great, they refunded my money without any hassle).
I'm going to try and get a subscription to MyGlam and check out the rest of these sites too. I think I saw that Beauty.com was lauching a similar service as well.
