Thundershirt

Recently a friend of ours asked on Facebook if anyone knew what would help her dog with its anxiety problems. An overwhelming number of people suggested checking out the Thundershirt ($40) to help with nervousness and separation issues. Apparently the shirt applies constant pressure to your dog's chest, which helps it to calm down. From all the positive reviews and vet/trainer recommendations, we're thinking this is an awesome method for relieving your pup's stress without medicine. We wish they made them for humans!

This reminds me of the episode on Grey's Anatomy where the new cardiac doctor was having a panic attack and Christina had to hug her to calm her down. Guess it works with doggies too!

The original, patented Anxiety Wrap was invented by Susan Sharpe, certified professional dog trainer and T-touch practitioner.

It works by two mechanisms: 1) maintained pressure, and 2) acupressure.

Ever since trying the original Anxiety Wrap on my own dog a couple years ago I have been sold on the product and have been recommending it to my clients with anxious and fearful dogs as part of an overall behavior modification program.

The Anxiety Wrap was recently evaluated in a clinical research study at Tufts University by veterinarian, Dr. Nicholas Dodman and found to be effective in 89% of the dogs participating in the study. Compare this to the 80% effectiveness rate reported by Thundershirt based on surveys of its own customers.

I believe the Anxiety Wrap really is a superior product. To learn more about how the products compare, see: http://dubuquedogtrainer.hubpages.com/hub/dog_anxiety_wrap

Just to set the record straight, if anyone deserves the credit for originating the use of pressure wraps on dogs and other animals, it is certainly Linda Tellington-Jones, founder of the TTouch Method. She has been advocating the use of these for literally decades. I personally have been using body wrapping techniques for many, many years, long before either the Anxiety Wrap or the Thundershirt were introduced. The main reasons I use, prefer, and recommend the Thundershirt vs. other body wraps: Thundershirt is the easiest to put on and adjust, has no cumbersome extra straps, and, in the vast majority of cases, eases anxieties, relaxes body tension, reduces arousal, etc.

The other thing I like is that Thundershirts are now so widely available at retail stores, veterinary offices, and direct from professional trainers, you can take your dog with you to try out which size is the best fit, which takes the guesswork out of determining sizes. Thundershirt is a very useful tool for me as a trainer and a dog owner and I only wish I would have had it 20 years ago.
