Dog
Believe us, we're really not behind the whole idea of pet as accessory (who brings a dog to a department store?) but we do want to point out that October is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month. Shelters across the country have more animals than they can handle, and we can't stress enough that if you've been wanting a dog and are in a position to adopt one, there are potential pets who need you now. Grab a leash and take the plunge - you won't know how you managed without the wagging tail, the walking companion, or the doggy head resting on your knee.

10 Million cats/dogs are killed each year in shelters. Give them the loving home they deserve and adopt from a shelter.
