We're just gonna come right out and say that Sounds of the Universe ($10) is not Depeche Mode's best album. That stated, this is, a) the group's twelfth studio album—everyone gets a pass at that point and, b) still damn enjoyable. In SOTU, Depeche Mode has taken a chance on something different. By mixing old-school analogue synthesizers with new wave guitar rifts, they conjure the vision of "the universe and space travel" that was their goal, creating a pretty worthy electonica album as a result.
