After the smash success of her eponymous debut album ("Put Your Records On" was everywhere in 2006), Corinne Bailey Rae just... disappeared. Why? Sadly, her husband passed away unexpectedly, and she retreated for awhile to grieve and write new music. Her newest record, The Sea, ($13) is a hauntingly beautiful, soulful collection of songs that aren't directly about grief, but have hidden layers of pain and meaning. Our favorite tracks include the contemplative title song, "The Sea," and the up-tempo tune, "The Blackest Lily."

this is another one I first heard on KCRW and became obsessed w/. Reading this post was the first time I learned about her loss and now the record means so much more to me when I listen to it. Thanks for that.
