Hape Checkout Register

If current conditions are anything to judge by, our kids are destined for a life of obscene college debt and jobs in retail. We might as well get them dreaming young by buying them this Hape Checkout Register ($37). It even comes with a totally cutting-edge faux credit card processor.

What's wrong with a job in retail? I find that generalization that you're make about retail to be extremely offensive. I've worked in retail for years since I finished college and I LOVE it. However its people like that treat retail employees like crap and make other non-retail workers think retail sucks. Someone has to sell you all the crap you show on this website.

Hey Victoria! I definitely didn't mean to imply there's anything wrong with a job in retail - and agree about the unfairness of the lousy treatment people in the gig are often subjected to. The point was more about how tough it is for kids coming out of college these days to get the jobs they trained for (which can make paying off those loans an even bigger challenge.) Sorry if that got lost in translation!

Jane, Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure how the message can get lost in translation. Before I go on a verbal bender I want to be clear that I understand your blurb was not meant to offend and you can't please everyone all the time. Perhaps I was quick to comment however I want to be true to my feelings, and that was: I was very disappointed in the lackadaisical phrase. I just figured that a website that's completely dedicated to shopping would respect the occupation of retail and retail employees.
Your blurb feeds the stereotype of retail employees and retail being a 'fall back' job. I chose retail because I enjoy shopping, and helping people shop. Seriously, I spend all day shopping with people while my friends sit in offices and click away on their computers...I don't work on commission and I make more than my college degree toting friends.
While I appreciate the understanding that many retail workers are educated college graduates the message your sending makes light of very real problems in our society. College graduates cannot find jobs in their field. Discrimination against those with blue collar jobs is also a very real problem, one that people don't seem to even realize exists. It reminds me of an article in Cosmopolitan Magazine that recommended the best way to get what you want at a retail store was to make a big scene and threaten the sales associates job. I'm sure you can image how upset readers were!

All I ask is in the future Outblush consider the people they're catering to and the message that Outblush wants to send to its readers.
Thanks for taking the time to respond. Keep up the great work. (And for the record, I did buy this cash register as a Christmas gift. Thanks for the idea!)
