Tracy Anderson has been lauded by Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna for her specialized approach to fitness and the female body. Anderson combines dance moves from ballet and jazz with elements of traditional high impact aerobics; the variety of movement is meant to work out and fatigue all the major muscle groups and yield a lean and sculpted feminine form. In Tracy Anderson Method Presents: Dance Cardio Workout DVD ($30) she breaks down the eight combinations slowly in one chapter and then you follow her through the 45-minute routine. The workout is exhausting but fun and is incredibly effective when done on a regular basis. A few caveats - because of the degree of choreography this routine would be easier for individuals with a dance background, not that people without one couldn't do it - but it might take a bit longer to really get into the rhythm of the routine. Don't get discouraged if you have to go back and forth for a week or two between the breakdown and the actual cardio workout - give yourself some time to learn the moves so you can dance the whole routine all the way through. The one technical downside to the DVD is that the breakdown and the routine aren't broken down into individual chapters -so it takes a while to fast forward to the different combinations, but we promise that it's worth it!
