Smelling salts, eh? With these spring allergies, we'll try anything! While other smelling salts can potentially contain harmful ingredients, Portland General Store's Eucalyptus Smelling Salts ($7) are 100% natural. This little potion bottle contains eucalyptus and peppermint oils that will revive you with their strong aroma and even clear you up when you have a cold or clogged sinuses.
Smelling salts have been used from Roman times to the Victorian era and through to World War II. They mostly consisted of an ammonia compound and were used to revive those who fell out of consciousness, such as athletes, ailing patients, or fainting women (apparently, fainting women was a huge thing in Victorian Britain!). For some time, policemen carried smelling salts in their pockets, and doctors even advised to keep bottles of the compound in first aid kits. Nowadays, sniffing ammonia might not be considered the most health-conscious solution for revival. We thankfully figured that one out!
