They've actually done it: chocolate that we don't want even as a gift. We're not teetotalers, and we quite enjoy our liqueur-filled chocs now and again, so that's not the problem. The problem is that there are liqueurs and there are liqueurs. Advocaat is a very thick, very sweet brandy-based drink which, in its original South American form, contained avocado. If a big glass of avocado and sugared brandy doesn't sound that good to you, take heart: when the recipe made it back to Amsterdam and environs, where avocados don't grow, those enterprising folks replaced it with (wait for it) egg. Ah. Much better. If you decide to try these Verpoorten Advocaat-Filled Dark Chocolates ($18), make sure to order them between September and April, as they aren't shipped during the hottest parts of the year. That stuff is
perverse perishable, you know.
