If you're addicted to apocalyptic speculative fiction and you've run out of zombie books, give Stephen King's The Stand ($6) a shot. At 1,439 pages, it's no small undertaking, but those pages turn fast. Read on as 99% of the world's population dies of a highly contagious superflu, leaving the few survivors to battle it out, good vs. evil style! If you don't have a strong stomach, you won't get through the first part of the book, which is full of dead bodies. We'll never get the image of the "dark sweet treat" Larry Underwood discovers in the comfort station out of our heads.
