Decidedly not for those who prefer their stories to look at life and love through the lenses of rose-colored glasses, Christos Tsiolkas's novel The Slap ($12) unearths the nitty-gritty underbelly of relationships, multiculturalism, and parenting. The book opens with a slap - a barbecue attendee cracks his hand across the face of a child who doesn't belong to him and is taken to court. Told from eight different points of view, the events of the barbecue unfold with the voices taking sides and revealing their own personal backstories.
