We're still haunted by Jeannette Walls' powerful memoir, The Glass Castle, so we dove into her newest novel, The Silver Star ($15), knowing that it wouldn't be a particularly cheerful read. It wasn't, but Walls' beautiful prose and resilient protagonist help balance out the descriptions of poverty, abandonment, and power abuses. You probably won't want to take this one with you to the beach, but it'll make for fantastic book club read; members will have plenty to discuss by the story's end.
