Ever since we read Tom Robbins' Jitterbug Perfume, we've been curious about the perfume industry. We can't really say we possess any special olfactory powers, but we're slowly learning how to distinguish notes in our own perfumes. We just finished reading The Emperor of Scent: A True Story of Perfume and Obsession ($10) by Chandler Burr. Burr has a chance meeting with Dr. Luca Turin, one of perfume's most talented biophysicists, and decides to dig deep into the world of scent. It sounds a bit dull on the surface, but it's a fascinating read depicting a whole world full of powerful people and companies, deception, and secrecy. It had us captured from the very first page.
