We'll admit it. We're suckers for a riveting historical novel. One of our favorites is Pope Joan ($10) by Donna Woodfolk Cross. History buffs have long debated the existence of Pope Joan, a ninth-century woman who disguised herself as a man and rose through religious ranks to take on the title of Pope of the Catholic Church. The novel takes the myth of Pope Joan and brings it to life, detailing Joan's beginnings, transformation, and rise to the papacy. It's a enthralling take on the life of a woman during the Dark Ages. We highly recommend you put it on your beach read list!
