Sherlock Holmes was a confirmed bachelor, sentimental violinist, possible opium addict, and mystery solving genius. In The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Short Stories ($60) editor Leslie S. Klinger has created the Sherlockian equivalent of a Criterion edition DVD. Holmes fans will enjoy the annotations to Doyle's original manuscripts and discussions of the theories cultivated by the contradictions and ambiguities of these stories. Newcomers to the adventures of Holmes and Watson will have a better understanding of the world the characters lived in and exactly how significant and singular it was to be a "consulting detective."
