The basic plot of Jean Kwok's debut novel, Girl in Translation ($12), isn't anything new: a girl (Ah-Kim Chang) and her mother emigrate to New York, get jobs doing what amounts to slave labor in a clothing factory, and live in squalor, then, of course, overcome the odds to succeed. It's Kwok's superlative, fresh-voiced writing that sets this fairy-tale ending novel apart, drawing you in to the characters' lives and wanting them to succeed. Be prepared to read this in one sitting - you won't want to put it down!
