Ever shat in the woods? Well Bill Bryson has and he wants to tell you all about it. In his book A Walk in the Woods ($7) Bill Bryson describes his sojourn up the Appalacian trail from Georgia to Maine. The journey begins, not at the tip of the trail, but in his local sporting goods store where he is encouraged to spend thousands so that camping will feel just like being at home. His hiking companion is an old friend who, rather than offering encouragement and insight as they hike and struggle, perpetually begs to get off the trial and find refuge in a hotel where he can watch X-Files reruns and eat snickers bars. It is at times a loving homage to a beauty seldom ever see first hand, at others a trove of fascinating informational nuggets, and always a gut-bustingly hilarious story of man finding his way through the woods.

I adore this book. I read it years ago in college and it still never fails to make me laugh. Bill Bryson is a great travel writer and this is my favorite of his books. ;)
