If you're thinking of dipping into the wonderful world of D.I.Y. ice cream this summer, may we suggest Ample Hills Creamery: Secrets and Stories from Brooklyn's Favorite Ice Cream Shop ($16) as your guide. Ample Hills began as a single cart that sold ice cream during summer concerts in Prospect Park, NY. Today, the shop serves a few thousand visitors each year. (We've had the pleasure of waiting on a very long line to see what they hype was about, and can assure you it's worth it.)
Owners Brian Smith and Jackie Cuscuna have compiled recipes for some of the shop's most popular flavors like Stout 'n' Pretzels, Maple Bacon, Ooey Goey Butter Cake, and Salted Crack Caramel (so addictively good your loved ones might need to stage an intervention), along with staff stories, pictures, games, and other nifty tidbits. While making it yourself isn't quite the same as experiencing the wonder that is Ample Hills, this fun book is a close second.
