If over the top is the direction you're headed in your decor, consider the curvaceous Wisteria Butterfly Lovers Handpainted Chest ($909). The distressed finish would lend itself nicely to shabby chic spaces, but it could add something unique in an all black and white room too. Let's see why this chest has so much character, beyond its serpentine front and cabriolet legs.
The painted vignettes tell the story of the Chinese version of Romeo and Juliet, from the Jin Dynasty. In the the classic fable, "Butterfly Lovers," Zhu Yingtai wants to go to school, but her wealthy family doesn't allow her to attend (different times, ya know). She goes in secret, disguised as a dude and falls in love with her best friend and classmate, Liang Shanbo. After her identity comes to light, they vow to marry without knowing that Zhu's parents have arranged for her to marry someone else (bummer). Liang dies of heartbreak. During Zhu's wedding processional, she passes Liang's grave and gets it to open so she can throw herself in. Their spirits transform into beautiful butterflies and fly away together. Sweet?
