For the avid gardener and watermelon lover comes the classic Moon & Stars Watermelon Seeds ($3/packet of 25 seeds). An Amish mainstay for many years, this unique variety of extra sweet melon is covered with bright yellow stars and most usually one large moon. This variety contains plenty of seeds to save and plant and share for years to come. Yum!

How can you tell when the Moon & Stars watermelon is ripe. Do the vines turn brown and begin to die? Not really sure, first-time watermelon grower.

Here are the tips i picked up from another website.

Harvest: Everyone has a theory about when a watermelon is ripe. Unlike muskmelons that will often slip their stems, or whose ripeness can be sensed by smell or give to the touch, the tough-skinned watermelon does not give such hints. Some people thump them (I do) and listen for a dull sound. Some people scratch the skin (I do) and believe that if the rind scratches easily the melon is ripe. Some people look at the underside, where the melon has lain on the ground (I do), to see if the color has changed from white to cream-colored. You can't do this in the supermarket, but in the garden, look to see that the tendril closest to the stem is turning brown and drying out. Some people thump, scratch, look and then cross their fingers and just grab the largest melon (I do).

Even though the stem may look frail, if there are other melons on the same vine, clip the stem rather than pulling on the fruit. Goldman says this is one fruit that should be harvested later in the day rather than "in the early morning, when fruits are bloated and likely to crack."
