E.L.F. & NARS Cosmetics Giveaway!

Being astute persons, you've probably noted that the bulk of our beauty posts today were products by E.L.F. and NARS. Why? These two cosmetics companies are each sponsoring a fabu makeup giveaway this week (Yes, sponsoring. We're broke twentysomethings, and we have bills to pay, too!). In honor of that - because who wouldn't be inspired by all those amazing cosmetics? - we're centering most of our posts around the theme of various products for eyes, lips, and face.

But now, on to the giveaway, because we know that's what you all want. The prizes? One winner will get a NARS prize pack worth $182, including two eyeshadow duos, one lipstick, and five lip glosses; and one winner wil receive the E.L.F. 83 piece essentials kit, worth $30. How do you enter? Well, anyone who is our fan on Facebook by the entry deadline will be automatically entered, but to get up to two more entries (3 per person total), you can either leave a comment below or tweet us with your answer to the question: "What was the first piece of makeup you ever bought?" The deadline? 12pm PST Friday, November 20, 2009. Good luck!

The first makeup I stole was my mom's old lipsticks, all dried out and pink. The first makeup I bought was red lipstick, to rebel against the pink.

The first item of makeup I remember buying for myself is Merle Norman Automatic Shadow Base. My mom has used it since I was a little girl watching her apply her makeup everyday. I learned early on that in order to keep your eye shadow perfect and crease-free all day you must always start with a base.

The first makeup I ever bought was one of those compacts with about 20 different eyeshadows - it was hot pink, and the eyeshadow was truly obnoxious, all bright bright bright colors.

Oh I wish I could remember! I think I got a lot of old stuff from my many many sisters. (8 biological)

I'm sure I bought lil' bits of makeup here and there from the drugstore, but my first Fancy Makeup was a blue eyeshadow from MAC. Yes, it was blue. Shush.

My first makeup was a CoverGirl pressed powder compact. I felt so glamorous looking in the mirror and patting on the powder!

Of course my first makeup purchase had to be eyeliner. After borrowing my mom's for a while, I realized that I needed my own to fill my constant need for retouching! It's a girl's best friend. I still have it actually, to remind me of my first foray into the world of makeup addiction.

Amy

My first makeup was one of those huge kits with terrible colors of eyeshadow marketed toward little girls. :) I loved that lime green eyeshadow!

I eventually upgraded to Wet n Wild, then Cover Girl and Mary Kay, all the way up to the ranks MAC, Nars and Bare Escentuals. My how far I've come! :)

Posted on 11.17.09 at 2:50 PM

I actually bought several things at once, including blush, lipstick, and foundation; but The Very First Makeup I bought was mascara. :) It was Maybelline Great Lash in the pink and green tube.

Sheena

My first was Maybelline Great lash. I was so nervous! They felt enormous.

Amy

I, along with my 6th grade girlfriends, went to the pharmacy to purchase Rum Raisin Cover Girl lipstick. It was all the rage in 1994!

Wet N Wild White Eyeliner

Teresa

Cover Girl Liquid Makeup. I applied it with my fingers and was a total mess - I hadn't learned the "less is more" lesson yet. Ha!

Kat

The first item I bought was black kohl eyeliner! I thought I looked very made up :)

Kate

Posted on 11.17.09 at 3:04 PM

I was wearing crazy bright sally hansen nail polish long before I discovered any other type of makeup. Anything with glitter was a must.

Michelle

Posted on 11.17.09 at 3:08 PM

The first makeup I ever received was Tinkerbell pink nailpolish, probably from my mommy :)
As a teen I think Cornsilk face powder was my first 'grown up' makeup.

Jessica

Posted on 11.17.09 at 3:08 PM

Most of it was stuff my mom gave me at first from her own makeup collection, but my first makeup purchase was a compact of Cover Girl pressed powder and a bottle of hot pink Wet n Wild nail polish. From then on, makeup was an addiction!

Mary

Posted on 11.17.09 at 3:08 PM

The first "real" make up I ever had was Merle Norman. My mom as an incentive and reward for good grades in middle school, took me to Merle Norman for to pick out some cover up and pale pink lipstick. That started my love of makeup. When I had my first real job, and got my first paycheck, I went right to the MAC counter and got lipstick in 'O', eyeshadow in 'Shroom' and 'Sable' and Studio Fix. 10 years and many, many eyeshadows later, Shroom and Sable is still a staple in my makeup cabinet.

I have CLEAR eyelashes. The first makeup I ever bought was mascara. Silver. Nice.

Nikki

Posted on 11.17.09 at 3:10 PM

My very first makeup purchase ocurred when I was 5 or 6 years old. I saved my allowance to buy a Tinkerbell makeup set with eyeshadows and blush and lip balm. I can still remember how the lip balm smelled.

Catherine

Posted on 11.17.09 at 3:12 PM

Cover Girl Eyeliner and Mascara at the same time. I still use the mascara. :)

Mel

The first makeup I ever bought was a covergirl pressed powder compact. My cousin and I used to carry them in the back pocket of our jeans because we thought it was cool

Jennifer

Jessica

Posted on 11.17.09 at 3:36 PM

The first makeup I ever used was my mom's old Mary Quant pencils in a gorgeous mod tin. The first makeup of my own was a lipstick I shoplifted from the drugstore. The first I ever bought was nailpolish in a skull-shaped bottle at halloween. Those were the rebel years. . .

Shari

Posted on 11.17.09 at 3:48 PM

I'm showing my age but the 1st makeup I bought was a Yardley Pot O'Gloss when I was in 7th grade. I felt so sophisticated wearing it to junior high.

Maybelline pancake foundation when I was 13 -- oh my god, I went to town with the stuff before school one morning and thought I was SO chic... my mom says she laughed so hard after she dropped me off at school because I literally looked like I was WEARING A PANCAKE ON MY FACE.

I thought I looked like Claudia Schiffer.

Sara

Maybelline Great Lash Mascara in the pink and green bottle!

Candice

Posted on 11.17.09 at 5:18 PM

Bonnebell dr pepper lip smackers I was in 5th grade... If that doesn't count cover girl mascara I have blonde lashes and from that day on it's a must before I leave home.

Laura

Posted on 11.17.09 at 5:30 PM

I was eleven or twelve when I first bought lipstick in some unflattering shade of red. Then, Maybelline mascara in the pink and green bottle. I'm sure I looked awful.

Faith

Posted on 11.17.09 at 5:48 PM

I believe the first ever piece of makeup I ever bought was when I was 11 or 12. It was a Wet N Wild lipstick in an unflattering shimmery lavender. At the time I thought it was cool, now I realize I looked like I was some sort of weird ice child with frozen lips.

Jamie

Clinique almost lipstick

Sarah

Posted on 11.17.09 at 6:00 PM

I know it's been said a time or two, but BonneBell Lip Smackers in Dr. Pepper. I might still have a secret tube or two hidden around my apartment for when I'm feeling nostalgic...or chapped!

Jonelle

Either a bonne bell lipsmacker or a maybelline kissing slick. I'd love to find a kissing slick now!

Sara

Posted on 11.17.09 at 6:28 PM

The first makeup I bought was concealer, because of my dark circles! People have asked me if I had black eyes before. No, I didn't get punched in the face, thank you.

Alyssa

Posted on 11.17.09 at 6:33 PM

Bonnebell lipgloss when I was 15 --my mom was SUPER strict with me about wearing makeup. I was using lipgloss until I turned 21!

Emily Cain

Does Dr. Pepper Lip Gloss count? If not, I think I bought some under eye concealer.

Liscel

The first piece of makeup I bought was a Covergirl lipslick. I had to ask my dad to take me to the drugstore so I could hide the make up from my mom.

Jessica

Posted on 11.17.09 at 6:55 PM

Definitely lip smackers, I was addicted to that stuff as a pre-teen. I remember getting a Clinique gift pack in 6th grade and that's when I started experimenting with make-up, but I had no clue what I was doing!

Samantha

Posted on 11.17.09 at 7:09 PM

I believe my first piece of make up was a beautiful brown-with-gold-glitter lipstick from the Wet N' Wild. I was 11. I felt sooo purty. In realtiy, I was sadly not.

Catherine

OMG! It was one of those lipsticks from the 5 and 10 store (!) that was a horrible orange but....IT CHANGED COLOR ON YOUR LIPS to a fab pink! I was so jazzed! I had to hide it from my mother though.......NO MAKE UP UNTIL YOU'RE 14 (or something).

Actually the first piece of makeup I bought was a nightmare. I was 13 and not allowed to even touch the stuff, but one night when I was spending the night with a friend, and I purchased some eye liner. I put it on that night and was so delighted. That was the last time I got to enjoy it. I had to keep it hid from my parents. I was so terrified they would find it that I never got to enjoy it.

I have long eye lashes, I always have. So the first makeup I bought was Maybelline Great Lash Mascara. In the pink tube. I think it still looks exactly the same and always brings me back to being a teenager.

As soon as I put that mascara on, I knew life would never be the same! :)

The first makeup I remember buying was light blue eyeshadow and nail polish to match an outfit I had recently purchased. I am so glad I've learned a little about applying makeup since then.

Tinkerbell peel-off nail polish! I loved it when I was little.

I'm sure it was the assortment of Lipsmackers. They were the coolest!

My first piece of makeup was actually part of a kit. I bought a book specifically because it came with a "Make your own lip balm" kit. It came with fragrance oils and unscented lip balm. I was like 5 years old. So not only was I 5 years old buying my first makeup but I was also making my own.

The very first MU I bought was bright blue eyeliner from the drugstore. The first nice item I purchased was Spice lineliner from MAC.

cover girl eye shadow in a metallic powder blue shade (which was the IT color in the early 80s!)

I bought a multiple eyeshadow kit with bright, unflattering, low-quality shadows and covered my entire eyelid matching whatever color I wore that day. I was in 6th grade. (cringe.)

Maybelline Great Lash Mascara! Wasn't allowed to wear makeup until I was 16. IMMEDIATELY ran out and bought this the morning of my birthday.

My first ever makeup purchase involved some hard earned (aka birthday present) money at the tender age of 7. I trotted down to Mervyns with my mom and bought a fierce Tinkerbell cosmetics set. Perfume, scented powder, candy pink lipstick, and peel off matching pink nail polish. I was STYLIN! I soon moved on to Bonne Bell and eventually Clinique, but I wish I could rock that peel off polish today...tres chic!

Kristina

The Tinkerbell nail polish that you could peel off. I desperately loved that stuff. I might have been 6 years old.

My first make-up was definitely some Bonne Bell lip gloss. Most likely it was Dr. Pepper flavor.

Does nail polish count? I had crate-full by the age of 7. Red, blue, sparkles, you name it.

Must have been some kind of blush. It was the 80s.

I first bough lip gloss. I always watched my Mom putting on lipstick and thought it was the coolest thing ever. I pretty much only wear lipgloss...so I love it!

Marlynn

Cherry chapstick, which is somewhat more of a candy than makeup (come on, you know you ate it a little too when you were 8). But real makeup? blue mascara. don't judge. it was the mid-80's.

The first makeup I ever bought was a Max Factor pressed powder makeup. I remember being complimented when wearing it, but I don't remember the exact name, and of course it is no longer around - hasn't been for a long time.

Deborah

I think it must have been some kind of Clinique powder or eyeshadow. Or maybe it was the clear mascara. Start at the basics you know!

The first makeup I ever bought was a tube of plum colored lipstick. In middle school, I was helping a neighbor with her small clothing store and she decided to expand into the makeup business. She practiced her skills of figuring out colors on me and the only thing I could afford on my babysitter's salary was the lipstick. I wore it proudly, with probably no other makeup so I looked as awkward as a middle schooler is expected to look, but it was certainly my first, and most memorable, makeup purchase.

When I was 10 a red lipstick. As soon as I put it on i felt like a movie star. That red lipstick changed my life and the way i felt about myself.

The first makeup I remember buying was the standard brown Cover Girl compact. You know the ones...EVERYONE in my school had one of those damn things. Don't forget the Wet N Wild lipgloss and Maybelline mascara in the green & pink tube to complete the no-makeup look. <3

The first piece of makeup I ever bought was a Cover Girl Foundation Compact in Medium Beige. I was in high school, and it was a staple in my school bag ;)

Steph

My first make up was Lip Smackers strawberry lip gloss. It was goopy and stinky and I loved it! My lips could be seen from space with that shine!

Naya

CoverGirl Clean Pressed Powder in Medium Beige and some LipSlicks lip gloss in pink. Judging by the comments, the pressed powder seems to be the staple for middle school girls.

I think the first piece of makeup I ever purchased was Shiseido powdery foundation, kind of pricey for a first item but it was what my mom used to wear so I considered it 'tried and true'

My first piece of make-up was Avon lipstick. My mom would order Avon cosmetics around the holidays, and I begged her one year to let me have some lipstick. It was fun-- I felt so grown up!

I'd take my hard-earned baby-sitting money and go to K-Mart to buy Maybelline's Kissing Koolers lip gloss in Watermelon Swirl,Maybelline's Kissing Potion in Cherry Smash and Bonne Belle clear mascara for my very blond eyelashes.
