Personal Shopper: Gifts for Erin's Graduate Friends

Says Erin: "I have a question that will (hopefully!) apply to a lot of your readers for this time of year - graduation gifts! I have two of my best girlfriends graduating from Master's/Doctorate programs this spring - one is getting an MBA in Marketing, the other is now a doctor. Both these women are smart, super stylish, and true "go-getters". I want to get them each a thoughtful gift that demonstrates how proud I am of their accomplishments, while being helpful to them as they embark on new career paths. Here are the details:
- Budget: $50
- Event timing: Last week of May
- Things both women like: purses, shoes, bright colors, GOOD food, planning (big Type A personalities!)
- Things both women dislike: nothing is standing out here - both women are pretty open girls
Thank you!"

Hi, Erin, this is Marian! I'm no type A myself, but that's okay . . . right?

Don't answer that. Anyway, I hope that at least one of the following options will please each of your very accomplished amigas! For a purse, we have 1) this Hadaki Printed Scoop Sling, on sale for $30 at the moment. There are nine different patterns available, most of them brightly-colored, but to my eye at least this striped one is the best balance between style and professionalism. If they lug laptops everywhere (and I would bet at least one of them does) you could also look into 2) this dot-patterned Built NY laptop sleeve (on sale for $24). I'll finish off the fashion selections with 3) this silk scarf from Michael Stars ($27). This particular color combination is called "deep sea"; there are a couple of others.

If they cook and you think they'd like to try some fabulous modern Indian recipes, you need to grab 4) the Vij's cookbook ($20). (Vancouver shoutout!) And lastly, we have a neat little widget: 5) a universal all channel FM transmitter ($20) will allow an iPod or other electronic device to broadcast straight to your car radio, allowing you to listen and drive in safety and comfort (and without having to listen to commercials or clueless hosts).

Congratulations to your friends, Erin, and thanks for your request!

Vij's is the best cookbook (and restaurant) for Indian food! Love the Vancouver shoutout!
