We were initially horrified at the prospect of the pleated short returning - we'll leave 1994 where it was, thanks - but then realized that it's been reinterpreted in a surprisingly wearable way. And, now that the temperatures have hit 90-100 degrees across much of the East Coast, we're more amenable than ever to these babies. Since it's doubtful that pleated, bow- and belt-trimmed shorts will be trendy for all that long, should you fork over the big bucks for a designer name? Nah, but we'll show 'em to you just in case you won the lottery last night. We've rounded up five pairs at various price points, all in basic black - with a silhouette like this, solid colors are best.
1 - Alexander Wang High Waist Shorts ($380)
2 - Ella Moss 'Sedona' Shorts ($98)
3 - Miss Me Tie Side Shorts ($50)
4 - dELiA*s Jamie Pleated Shorts ($23 on sale)
5 - Simply Vera Vera Wang Pleated Shorts ($16)
And, as always, if you've got something you love that's out of your reach, email us and we'll find you some more budget-friendly lookalikes for a future Aspire/Acquire feature!

I think most of these would actually look really really hot. I'd steer clear of the Alexander Wang ones, though. Not just because of the insane price tag, but because anyone with a tiny bit of tummy would make them poof like crazy when seated. Not a good look! 2 & 5 (mostly 5 :)) are definitely the winners here!

I could have sworn #1 was Express, circa 1987. I'm pretty sure I had a pair just like that from them... It's amazing what returns into style.
I like the ties on #3 - a little different than the usual placement.
