Petunia Picklebottom Challenge: A Red Velvet Cake Bag for the Rest of Us?

Devoted Outblush reader Anya sent us an email saying she loves this Petunia Picklebottom Red Velvet Cake Cosmopolitan Carryall Diaper Bag, ($349, #1 in picture) but has no children and therefore no need for an attached changing pad, bottle pockets, and the like. She asked if we could "offer us childless gals a substitute?" Wow. This was a hard one, believe it or not. Dozens of searches on our fave handbag websites for "velvet," "brocade," "tapestry," and even "Petunia Picklebottom knockoffs" produced a mixed bag (a ha, a ha) of results. Hope this helps - and, honestly, we think you could just buy the PPB and ignore the fact that it's got a diaper pad. The bottle pockets can hold water bottles, and you can use the changing pad as a mini table for on-the-go picnics! *wink*

#2 - This Red Brocade Jenn Bag ($70) has the scrolled brocade-upholstery fabric & color palette we're aiming for, but the silhouette is more of a hobo than a carpetbag or tote.

#3 - More in line with the classic "carpetbag" silhouette, Carpetbag No. 3 by Mary Kaiser ($325) also has a tapestry fabric, and is lined with silk and has adorable leather handles and a plaid bow trim. The fabric isn't quite like the "vintage inspired floral European cut velvet" of the PPB, but it's close.

#4 - You may be scratching your head about #4, this Anna Street 3Style Runway Base Bag, ($120 and up) but hear us out: the genius part about all Anna Street bags is that you can buy "shells" to go over them in a myriad of different fabrics, to switch out the look but keep the silhouette. She's got some great brocades, paisleys, and florals on hand, so Anya, take a look and see if any mesh with your style.

She might try an etsy alchemy project too...You can make a request project, and crafters will bid on how much it will cost you to make.
