Fashion Focus: Fall '09

Summer isn’t officially on the calendar yet, but the fall 2009 fashions have come & gone on the runway. We’re seeing a lot of interesting stuff, so we wanted to fill you in on what you can expect for fall, and what you could bring out now to be ahead of the curve.

Velvet - These aren’t the stiff velveteen party dresses you wore as a toddler. Today’s velvet for grown-ups can take a structured dress from chic to space age, or a flowy cocktail dress from sexy to goddess. We’re coveting this luscious Proenza Schouler dress... (pictured left)

Structured Statement Coats - Serious coats like this stunning Alexander Wang number(center) were on nearly every designer’s runway. Some used fur (faux, we hope), some leather, but all had strong detailing and sharply defined silhouettes for an unexpected punch of style. Outerwear is often a neglected part of a woman’s look, so we’re excited to ratchet it up a notch and strut our stuff on the sidewalks.

Intricately Draped Skirt Silhouettes - Seen at everyone from Balenciaga to Christian Siriano (pictured right), these painstakingly looped, draped, and ruched skirts are a fresh take on the bubble and tulip skirts of the past couple years. They’re mostly done in satin and other heavy fabrics, to let the weight of the fabric work with the draping. Bonus? If you’ve indulged in a few too many bon-bons of late, these will hide a bit of a pooch.

Black Stockings - We didn’t see too many pants on the runway this year, but nearly every designer had models’ legs sheathed in sheer black hose. It’s not a look for the timid, but definitely makes your legs look like they go all the way up to there. Most were paired with ankle-high boots, so if you’re looking for an instant, quick update, boots & stockings are an easy way to go.
