Found something we really dislike here -- Butterfly Earrings ($59), made out of real butterfly wings. Remember the sadistic kid in the neighborhood who used to take the wings off of fireflies and kill other pretty things for fun? We suspect he grew up to design earrings made of butterfly wings. Okay, we know that butterflies don't live forever, but really...how easy would it have been to fabricate the wings, rather than use the real thing?

Actually the wings used for most of these pieces, when acquired correctly, are from butterfly farms. These farms preserve species and provide income to countries that collect them from around the world. Also the wings are collected after the natural death of the butterfly. They only have a life span of 30 days. Collecting wings when they are alive would result in bruised, damaged and therefore unusable wings.
Random knowledge yes. I only know because I researched it prior to purchasing. I wasn't keen on being a butterfly killer either. They really are beautiful.

Lora, Thank you! Seriously. The idea of the creepy kid in my neighborhood lingered in my mind as I reviewed these earrings. It's so good to know the genesis. You rock!
