Doubtblush: American Apparel Dark Wash High Waist Jean Shorts

You may have noticed that we're hardly perpetual rays of sunshine around here, but even so, we seem to spend a lot of our time enthusing about one gewgaw or another. Doubtblush exists to make it clear that we do not, in fact, like everything.

Those aren't shorts. Those are tummy-pooch exposing, cellulite enhancing jeans shorts of shame. That poor girl's ass is about to fall out. American Apparel Dark Wash High Waist Jean Shorts ($58) miss the mark on so many levels.

Gwah, I thought we left those kind of jorts behind when the original 90210 finally went off the air!

Wait... what's wrong with a bit of tummy pouch or showing your thighs? We all have stomachs and thighs... and if you have a tummy pouch it's going to happen no matter what you're wearing.

I think these shorts are really cute and stylish!

Shame on you for shaming people's bodies.

haha these shorts are NOT cute and styling. The point is that they would be unflattering on even those fabled women who don't have a tummy pouch and cellulite. Good call ladies, definitely Doubtblush material!

I think that the point Outlbush is making is that these shorts are NOT flattering, and dressing well is understanding how to flatter your body, no matter what type of body you have, and THOSE shorts don't flatter ANY body.

I saw those on the AA website the other day and was like...what is happening? What will I do if I see someone actually strutting around in those shorts, butt hanging and pooch out?!

Good doubtblush.

I'm surprised you guys gave this a doubtblush. That's because you usually love things that are hideous, and these aren't hideous.

I know these wouldn't work for me, but I know some people could pull it off. They're just jean shorts.

Also, you say that they're "cellulite enhancing." Well what about any other pair of shorts? Anything that shows off the leg?

Seriously, reconsider what you write.

not to mention i'm wary of any AA ad where you can't see the model's face. i can only assume it's some underage model who was harassed by the owner.

I don't see the problem- my mom was rocking these in 1992! Only hers were more awesome because they were acid washed and she tucked her t-shirts into them. And don't forget the bitchin' radio-giveaway neon fannypack and the high-top Reebocks.

For real, though, these are awful.

i'm going to add an amen to the doubtblush, because i can't imagine these looking good on almost anyone (even a slim, un-cellulited, fit person). some high-waisted stuff falls into the category of retro, stylish, put-together chic. these... don't. the high waist and short legs here have the effect of lengthening the butt and making the waist seem non-existent (even for this slim model). and, yeah, her ass is in danger of falling out.

so i agree wholeheartedly with the doubtblush here, and i don't think they were trying to put down anyone's body type, so much as the types of clothing that don't flatter anyone's body type.

this IS awful. It's like that SNL skit of mom jeans. They really would be unflattering. I'm also really tired of seeing womens ass cheeks hanging out from 'shorts' everywhere i go. blech!

As a hetro 30 something male, I can tell you, these are the quickest way to get your guy to not want to be seen in public with you this summer...the last thing we want is our girl to dress like our mom's.

Okay, okay, everyone simmah down now!

The point we were trying to make with this post is that there are some items of clothing that no woman, no matter how amazing her figure is or how confident she is, can pull off. Jean shorts in general are not bad (and boy, do we live in them in July and August when it's a billion effing degrees out and our A/C decides to go on the fritz), but these ones are. End of story.

Who is the model in the high waisted jean shorts ad? She is wearing a red top and lying across a blue railing.
