The Smithsonian Store never fails to amuse us, and crikey, this Stained Glass Butterfly Umbrella ($30) must be pretty darn heavy! Only joking, this beauty is not made of glass, but it does have sturdy fiberglass ribs to prevent it from buckling under high winds. The printed polyester pongee is as beautiful as it is strong, and its pattern bounces along the edge of the umbrella like a butterfly hovering from flower to flower.
Check it out ... Founded by painter and glass artist Louis Comfort Tiffany, Tiffany & Co. is synonymous with long-standing quality in jewelry and decorative glass arts. Our featured umbrella is based on a stained glass lampshade in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. The butterfly design fits with the tendency to depict organic motifs in the Art Nouveau movement preferred by Tiffany, although the movement usually represented plant life rather than animal life. Because of their superior craftsmanship, TIffany lamps continue to be a hotly coveted decor collector's item.
