Talk about a feast for the eyes! Swedish design superstar, Lisa Bengtsson was awarded Swedish Elle Décor's "Rising Star" award for 2009, and her Lisa Lisa Serving Tray ($55) is a good example why. This may look like a hot mess at first, but it's actually wonderfully cohesive piece of design. It'd fit right in at a burlesque themed party or a masquerade, although it might take attention away from our costumes.
What's going on here? Bengtsson's work is strongly influenced by
Surrealism, so using Salvador Dalí's work as the foundation for this piece makes perfect sense. Clock, lip, snail, insect and ant symbolism on this tray clearly references elements from Dalí's work, but the design composition is all her own. Her expressive collage technique makes a splash that leaves a lasting impression in our mind. So the acclaim appears to be warranted.
