The ambivalent attitude of The Birthday Party (Cowgirl) ($45/giclee print - $175/box print reproduction) by Dolan Geiman cracks us up. Tipping her hat, this chick is complacent on her steed and doesn't give a shit because it's her day. Her slouchy portrait pops against a texture rich mixed-media background, punctuated by a punch of red: a hopeful balloon.
Dolan Geiman's "contemporary art with a Southern accent" has spread all over the globe, and that's no surprise to us. Using a visual vocabulary of Americana, woodland animals ("especially birds"), and Southern comfort, Geiman cooks up eco-friendly works in his Chicago warehouse studio. He relies on reclaimed materials and rugged whimsy to create a rustic but modern aesthetic. Follow him on his blog or read his recent interview in Gapers Block for an inside look.
Editor's Note: We're such dummies; we got Dolan's name wrong. Thanks, M, and Sorry, Dolan!
