Bringing fine art to the beach seems ostentatious, but we'll blend right in with this Beach Towel ($95) based on contemporary artist Alex Katz's screenprint Ada with Sunglasses circa 1990. This piece of functional art was designed as part of the Artist Towel Series, and produced by the Works On Whatever/Art Production Fund, so we can get behind art for art's sake. The integration of art and life never felt so nice on our skin thanks to the luxurious 100% cotton.
Alex Katz is a New York artist associated with the Pop Art movement; his work reached a peak of production in the 1960s and 70s, and his paintings, prints, and drawings are iconic for their cool confidence in handling of color and reductive treatment of shapes. His expressive yet calm expressions of character in his portraiture reflect his personality as an artist, and are subdued but full of energy. Colby College Museum of Art in Maine built an entire wing dedicated to the artist, and he has had solo shows in New York. Curious? check out more images.
