We haven't always been complimentary about perfume house Etat Libre d'Orange - they're most famous for their revolting (and intentionally so) Sécrétions Magnifiques, which really is more a negative attention-getting technique than a wearable fragrance. What with that one and the naughty names they tend to pick, they devote a lot of attention to getting us to believe they're up to no good.
But Tom of Finland ($90) is very, very good. This unisex scent, unlike most of its kind, is actually sexy: it's a blend of sweet leather (or the wood-tarry notes referred to as leather in the perfume world anyway), rubber, aldehydes (like in Chanel No. 5), soft powder, citrus, and cool iris that is definitely naughty, but not nasty. Which, if you're familiar with the work of the artist it was named for, is perfect: Touko Laaksonen's homoerotic drawings manage to be both very explicit and very good-humored. Learn more at the Tom of Finland foundation if you're curious. (Not safe for work! Obviously!)
