The crew at smell bent likes their voodoo strong, but we find ourselves most drawn to their lighter (comparatively speaking, folks) offerings. In honor of their first anniversary as a company, they've released ONE, which is a marvelously autumnal blend of old paperback books, vanilla, wood, musk, and cardamom. And we don't feel one bit silly listing all of those notes, since you can actually smell all of them in there.* The oil will cost you $20, while you can get a travel spray for $7 and a full bottle of the eau de toilette for $45.
*Although vanilla and old books are pretty similar olfactorily, as this magnificent quote from Luca Turin explains: "Lignin, the stuff that prevents all trees from adopting the weeping habit, is a polymer made up of units that are closely related to vanillin. When made into paper and stored for years, it breaks down and smells good. Which is how divine providence has arranged for secondhand bookstores to smell like good-quality vanilla absolute, subliminally stoking a hunger for knowledge in all of us."
