Just as St. Patrick's day has nothing to do with green beer, Cinco de Mayo has nothing to do with tequila - like that's ever stopped us! Brief history lesson - The fifth of May commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over the French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín was too busy kicking French tail to kick back with a cerveza and shot of Patron, but we'll do it for him.
It may come as no shock to you, but Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more in the U.S. than in Mexico - man we love a reason to drink!
A margarita may seem like the obvious choice today, but if you haven't had a REAL margarita, you ain't livin. Note to our lovely readers - Step away from the margarita mix - this stuff is nasty and you don't need all that synthetic nonsense. Come, step into the light!
Salt for rimming the glass (optional)
2 ounces tequila (Vida Tequila Reposado ($45) will knock your socks off!)
1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
¾ ounce Cointreau
1 teaspoon agave nectar
Shake tequila, lime juice, Cointreau and agave nectar in a mixing tin with ice. Strain into a glass with a salted rim and filled with ice.
To salt the rim, run a lime wedge around the rim and then dip into a bowl filled with salt. Shake off excess.
